Liz and Will sat down at the kitchen table. “So that went well.” Liz leaned back in her chair.

Will stretched his legs out. “Look, I know you’re not happy, but there’s no good time for something like that.”

Liz stared at her hands. She’d grown used to making her own decisions, and this didn’t sit well with her. “Maybe, but you might have let me in on the plan.”

“There was no plan. There was an opportunity, and I seized it.”

Liz nodded. That was so Will—all action, no thought of the consequences. But wasn’t that what had attracted her to him? He was past fifty, but he hadn’t let himself grow old and staid. He didn’t worry about consequences. That wasn’t always a good thing, but the flip side was that he still had a spirit of adventure. She loved that about him.

“A breakup’s a breakup. They hurt. But hanging on through the holidays just made it worse. Sometimes, you just gotta pull off the bandage.”

Liz wrinkled her nose. “So you’re likening Molly’s leaving her home to an adhesive bandage?”

Will’s eyes drew together. “There’s no winning this, is there?”

“Not really, no.”

Will leaned closer. “Sorry, Lizzie.”

Her gaze softened. “Maybe it would have been just as hard no matter when I told her. But I’m used to deciding these things.”

“Yeah, I know. She’s your daughter. And I barged in without thinking. Sorry.”

Will reached over the table and took her hand in both of his. “As for shacking up, maybe I’m just waiting for the right time.”

At the same moment, the realization of what he’d just said clearly struck them both.

Liz lifted an eyebrow. “So timing doesn’t matter… except when it does?”

His eyes sparkled as he glanced toward the door. “I just thought of something I need to do at the farm.”

Liz took pleasure in making him squirm. “Oh, really? What’s that?”

“I don’t know, but I’ll think of something.” He paused long enough to kiss her on the forehead.

As he went to the door, she called after him. “I’m in no hurry, but if you happen to notice an adhesive bandage on my left ring finger, you’ll know that the timing is right.”

Will grinned. “Good to know.”
